In 18th of August, 2014, CEOSS organized a symposium in Alexandria entitled, ” Does Democracy Fulfill Social Justice?”. One hundred seventy five attendees participated in the symposium.
Rev. Dr. Andrea Zaki, CEOSS General Director , made the opening speech of the symposium, welcoming the attendees and the speakers: Dr. Sultan Abu Ali, the former Finance Minister, and Dr. Shereen El Shawarby, Assistant Finance Minister for Social Affairs. Then he discussed the most important concepts of modern democracy and ways of its application, and how it leads to the achievement of social justice.
Concepts of social justice and their influence on citizens were addressed, too; in addition to the role of the state and the public and private sectors which contribute to the achievement of social justice. Many participants shared the idea of the methods or the approaches of democracy, in our Arab communities in general and our Egyptian communities in particular, if they have already achieved social justice which we aim for. Discussions showed that all political, social and cultural powers have to combine and unite to adopt the idea of applying democracy correctly, starting from localities, assemblies, trade unions and even the House of Representatives and the head of state. This is to be done along with encouraging citizens to access their rights so as to ensure a decent and honorable life and to improve their standard of living, including the achievement of social justice.
