CEOSS FID organized a seminar in January 16, 2013 entitled: “The Economic Crisis and How to Overcome it – A Civil Society Vision”, as an attempt to contribute to overcoming the economic crisis Egypt, like any other country that witnessed a revolution, is going through. The seminar also aimed to emphasize the important role of civil society organizations in the process of economic development and transformation of the society and to define its objectives and implementation of development programs. About 185 participants varying from university professors, economists, Islamic and Christian religious leaders, intellectuals and media professionals attended the seminar.
Keynote Speakers included Mr. Salah Abdel-Maksoud, Minister of Media, Dr. Hazem Beblawy, Deputy Prime Minister For Economic Affairs and a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Hanaa Khairuddin, a part time professor at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at the University of Cairo, served as Chairman of the Department of Economics from 1990 until 1996 and Director of the Centre for Economic and Financial Research and Studies from 1985 to 1990. The seminar was facilitated by Dr.Rev. Andrea Zaki, CEOSS General Director.
Dr. Hana Khairuddin stressed that the civil society and media have an important role in dealing with problems troubling the Egyptian society including corruption, mistrust, political tensions between different sects, insecurity and the economic problem. She also mentioned that the banking sector should work to provide funding for the private sector and review funding costs; it can also provide productive job opportunities. She also urged the government to improve direct local and foreign investment, and not to change the decision of government in the fields of investment (change the price of land sold for investment)
Dr. Hazem Beblawy stressed on the importance of restoring security and stability and knowing the strategic directions of the economic system and its vision for property, insurance, investment. He said, “A conscious vision for the future is the way to deal with the economic crisis.” He also said that although the situation is extremely difficult, the Egyptian economy over the past two years showed an unexpected resilience as a strong economy. He affirmed that we should have a vision of the population through increasing the productivity of individuals and have an industrial strategy and openness to the world.
Mr. Salah Abdel-Maksoud, Minister of Media stressed on the need for national reconciliation and new channels for dialogue. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Media saved 22 million pounds that were considered violation of regulations due to corruption. Finally he said that the Egyptian society is going through many crises that need compelling and creative solutions, and media has a big role to play to achieve the stability of this country.
